![]() ![]() Some top choices are Malwarebytes, Norton, McAfee, and TotalAV. So, not a scam or a Russian company but also not a real deal. Its important to watch out for warning signs of online scams. And they are as aggressive as Sirius radio at keeping you as a subscriber. What sources are indicating a different view?Įdit: Upon further reading, as my curiosity was peaked, it does appear that they communicate poorly about the very limited features of the free version. There have been a event concerns about using Kapersky’s products as a US resident but I can find nothing about TotalAV with that regard. ![]() Kapersky is a well known provider of anti virus software based in Russia. Again, google search did not indicate any Russian ties. But when I need to pay for the upgrade, I can.Īnd it is from a UK company. ![]() I have been happy with the free or cheap version of products a majority of the time. Another independent testing lab, AV-Comparatives, gave the highest rating of Advanced+ to TotalAV’s protection. It also showed an excellent 100 detection when using 4-week-old widespread malware, and didn’t flag false positives. That product lists for 99 per year to protect. But, unless you consider the whole freemium structure a scam, not sure why you are going after TotalAV. A more detailed report by AV-Test shows that TotalAV successfully blocked 97 of zero-day malware attacks in 2022. Most features on the Internet Security menu, along with Password Vault and Family Sharing, require purchase of the commercial TotalAV Antivirus Pro. To get all the features, you, of course, would need to move up to a more expensive version. (I guess $3 here, so not exactly free.) But pretty much like many other apps and software that I have used, including popular security related software like Malware Bytes. Based on my quick search, it is recommended or at least has neutral reviews from PC World, PC Magazine, Us World&News 360 and Kim Komondo among others. This is all based on very few minutes spent researching this but I believe this post should likely be removed as this software has no reputable backers as far as I can tell, and reliable and reputable anti virus software is critical to the success of bogleheads. I do also believe based on what I read that Total AV is either a scam, a Russian government program, or at the best case a shell of a software that is promoted in order to sell additional add on etc. Based on your post count I believe you are a contributing member to this forum. ![]()
